Repairs and Restoration

Gilbert Cox - Luthier
Gilbert graduated in 1989 from the Newark School of Violin Makers and studied bow restoration under leading bow maker, Paul Barter.
Gilbert’s workmanship is highly regarded in the trade and he is recognised for his careful restoration of many fine instruments.
Besides restoration and the making of new instruments, he also runs classes to teach aspiring violin craftsmen.
Gilbert is a much-valued member of our team here at Academy Music.

Peter Ratcliff - Luthier
Peter was born in Geneva, Switzerland of Anglo-Italian parents.
At the age of eighteen, he came to study violin making and repairing in London, where he completed a four year apprenticeship, and was awarded distinctions in both violin making and stringed instrument restoration.
A violin made by Peter won a distinction from the Delme String Quartet for tonal excellence in the last of the Facta Britannia violin making competitions.
Peters work both as a violinmaker and bow maker is much appreciated by professionals, amateurs and student musicians.
